Learn from CAMFT's expert attorneys in a Law and Ethics webinar series to support your practice.

This 3-hour law and ethics webinar will delve into the more nuanced areas of gift giving and receiving within the context of the therapeutic relationship, explain updates to the BBS advertising regulations, and describe the elements that constitute ethical client termination. Each of these topics is unique and requires a clear and thorough understanding of the legal and ethical implications involved. This webinar will be informative in a way that helps participants formulate legally and ethically sound courses of action in dealing with each of these areas in their practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Interpret the CAMFT ethical standards relevant to gift giving and receiving.
Asses when it is appropriate and/or inappropriate to either give and/or receive a gift during the therapeutic relationship.
Identify the updated BBS advertising regulations.
Apply advertising standards in alignment with all legal and ethical requirements.

Presenter

Alain Montgomery, Esq. is a member of the State Bar of California. Alain received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Prior to joining the CAMFT legal department, Alain worked in public interest law as a legal advisor for the Superior Court of California where he helped self-represented parties navigate the complexities of small claims litigation. As a member of the CAMFT legal department, Alain has served as part of the support staff for the CAMFT Ethics Committee and has represented the Association at various state regulatory board meetings. After graduating from college and before attending law school, Alain worked as a ski instructor at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 4-hour continuing education course provides mental health professionals with an introductory framework for understanding the kink and BDSM community, aimed at fostering more informed, respectful, and affirming clinical practice. Participants will gain insight into core concepts, terminology, and common relationship dynamics, while exploring motivations for participation, community norms, and practices related to consent, safety, and vetting. The course will also examine diverse subcommunities, cultural contexts, and evolving aspects of kink, including the role of technology and altered states. Attention will be given to the relationship between kink and trauma, as well as the historical pathologization of kink and current DSM-5 distinctions. Emphasis will be placed on clinical guidelines, ethical considerations, and case-based application to support nonjudgmental, culturally competent, and sex-positive care, including the potential for healing, connection, and meaning-making within kink.

This presentation will assist licensees in treating clients in an ethical and clinically sound manner by increasing cultural awareness, reducing bias, and providing clinically relevant guidance for working with clients who engage in kink or BDSM practices. Attendees will develop a stronger understanding of consent frameworks, safety practices, and community norms, and will learn to differentiate consensual kink from abuse or pathology. Through the integration of clinical guidelines, ethical considerations, and case-based application, participants will be better prepared to avoid common missteps, assess client needs with greater accuracy, and practice within their scope of competence. This training supports clinicians in delivering respectful, affirming, and culturally competent care to diverse client populations, including those within the kink community.

Presenter Jennifer Rehor, LMFT, CST, CST-S will be joined by a team of licensed psychotherapists from ATC, including Sandra Koellmann, LCSW, CST (AASECT Certified Sex Therapist); Skyler “Skye” White, LMFT, PATC (Certified Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Provider); and Kelly Goldsteinholm, LMFT. Together, they bring diverse clinical perspectives and offer an engaging, evidence-informed training grounded in real-world practice, supervision, and applied clinical experience.

EDUCATIONAL GOAL

This course is designed to introduce mental health professionals to the foundational concepts needed to better understand and support clients who engage in or identify with kink and BDSM practices and relationships.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Attendees will be able to:

Define key concepts, terminology, and common relationship dynamics within kink and BDSM.
Describe community norms and practices related to consent, safety, vetting, and participation, including the diversity of subcommunities and cultural contexts.
Apply clinical guidelines and ethical considerations to support affirming, culturally competent care for kink-identified clients, including differentiating kink from pathology and identifying when consultation or referral is clinically appropriate.

Course Completion certificates will be awarded electronically in exchange for a completed evaluation form. Please make sure the Program Administrator has your correct email.

Course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Partial credit will not be awarded.

Participants must be present for the entire length of the workshop to be awarded credit. Participants will not be given CE credit if they are more than 15 minutes late and/or do not stay for the entire length of the workshop.

This course is provided by the San Diego Chapter of the California association of marriage and family therapists (Provider #57330) is approved by the California association of marriage and family therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. PRESENTER(S)

Jennifer Rehor, LMFT, CST, CST-S is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (94564), an AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist, and an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor. She is the clinical director of Affirming Therapy Center in San Diego. She is a published author in the field and her passion is helping people to live more fulfilling lives across the domains of kink, polyamory, and sexuality.

Sandra Koellmann, LCSW, CST is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (107435) and an AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist. She is a Gender Sexuality Relationship Diversity (GSRD)-affirming therapist who specializes in kink, fetish, BDSM, D/s relationships, age play, pet play, and ABDL lifestyles.

Skyler “Skye” White, LMFT, PATC is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (139620) and a Certified Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Provider. Her primary focus is helping people build secure relationships, specializing in sexuality, gender, CNM, BDSM, lifestyle, and Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy.

Kelly Goldsteinholm, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (155291). She works with the LGBTQ+ and kink community, helping to explore their identity and past trauma, plus those experiencing disordered eating. She specializes in trauma/PTSD, eating disorders and kink awareness.

This is a free yoga event for all levels for our members, including their partners, friends and family.

If you haven't had the opportunity to meet our very own, James Sharkey, you may be pleased to know that he teaches yoga as well. James has been kind enough to provide this class to our members at no charge.

Bring those that are close to you and meet your fellow therapist members. It will be important to bring a towel or mat for each participant. All levels of Yoga are welcome, from beginner to advanced.

James teaches vinyasa and hot yoga at Core Power, RY-200 certified. He believes there is no single "right" way to practice "Just breath, movement, and space to reset, guided by what your body needs."

Here at this monthly gathering we can talk about whatever we need to talk about - the weight of this moment, showing up for our clients while carrying our own emotional load through such a difficult political climate, sharing what’s working…and what isn’t, and reminding ourselves that we are not alone.

This is also a space for genuine community. There is real strength in diversity and here we lean into it together. The spirit of intersectionality we hold that we come to this work from different walks of life – different races, classes, genders, and sexual orientations, and these shape us both professionally and personally.

This law and ethics-focused training is designed for mental health professionals who are paneled with insurance companies, considering becoming in-network, or seeing clients who wish to use out-of-network benefits. While insurance provides increased access to care, it also introduces complex legal and ethical obligations. During the training, Ms. Jasper will discuss how to fully inform patients about insurance issues at the outset of treatment, bill accurately and respond to records requests and audits in a manner that complies with state and federal confidentiality laws.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify essential insurance-related disclosures that must be included in the informed consent process at the outset of treatment.
Implement informed consent procedures that fully notify patients about insurance issues and financial responsibilities at the start of treatment.
Execute accurate billing practices to ensure compliance with insurance company requirements and professional standards.
Identify common reasons for insurance record requests and audits.
Respond to records requests and insurance audits effectively while maintaining adherence to state and federal confidentiality laws, such as HIPAA.

Presenter

Sara Jasper, Esq., CAMFT Staff Attorney grew up in the Sacramento area. She graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Journalism. While attending CSUC, Sara Interned for Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C. and served as an editor for the award-winning weekly student newspaper, The Orion. Sara attended The University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law where she served as a library research assistant to professors on campus. During law school, she also clerked for the California Judicial Council, Center for Children, Families & the Courts and for the National Center for Youth Law. Until she moved to San Diego last fall, Sara was on the Board of Directors for Sacramento Court Appointed Special Advocates (C.A.S.A.) and is a member of the State Bar of California. Prior to joining CAMFT, Sara worked at the private firm of Middleton, Young & Minney, LLP where she specialized in education and employment law. Sara also worked as the Legal Liaison and Administrative Officer in the Office of the Chief of Police for the City of Sacramento for three years. She assumed her role with the City of Sacramento's Police Department upon graduating from law school.
