“Mindfulness and Compassion in Psychotherapy”

3 Hour CEU Workshop Series

Part 1: Introduction to Mindfulness

In partnership with the University of California San Diego Center for Integrative Medicine and Department of Psychiatry

Presented by Steven Hickman, PsyD, Executive Director of the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness, and Jacquelyn Schwartz, MA LMFT

In this presentation we will discover how mindfulness can make you a more effective therapist.  We will explore what it means to be mindful and how to cultivate mindfulness in the therapeutic relationship.  We will learn through experiential exercises how mindfulness practice can increase awareness, promote integration, enhance functioning, and contribute to an overall sense of well-being.  We’ll introduce practical applications to a range of psychotherapeutic situations. This presentation will further your understanding of the expanding body of scientific research in the area of mindfulness and its implications for creating positive outcomes in psychotherapy.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Articulate how mindfulness enhances psychotherapy.
  2. Integrate experiential exercises involving various awareness practices to settle and focus the mind.
  3. Identify three ways in which mindfulness can manifest in psychotherapy.
  4. Consider the value of establishing a regular personal mindfulness meditation practice before explicitly teaching it to others.
  5. Understand key research supporting the clinical value of mindfulness.
